‘In winter, November to March temperatures rarely rise above 4 degrees Celsius and in parts of the region may stay below freezing almost permanently from mid-December to late February. The first snows usually come in November, and there’s normally snow cover from January to April. Winter hours of daylight are short, and sometimes it never seems to get properly light at all.’

These photographs were taken in Riga, the capital of Latvia. My main intention with these works was to focus on the city’s atmosphere in relation to the sun, which was a rare site in this cold wintry country. When the skies opened and the sun broke through, the ice began to melt and the warmth thawed cold stern faces, the atmosphere became serene. The use of pinhole in these works reacts directly with the sunlight to formulate a sinuous mixture of shapes and colours that express the inner ambience of sunlight over Latvia.
