STILLNESS
2001

Stillness is most evident in 19th century Victorian portrait photography; it is this stillness that inspired me. In much of 21st century photography, modern materials are too fast to create that same quality of stillness. Representation of the female form is an issue that has occupied my work for a long time. By using the pinhole technique, an exposure time of fifteen minutes can force stillness upon a subject , therefore the female form acts more naturally. The breathing body is never completely still so it becomes a challenge to keep it still for an extensive amount of time.

By using a nude, we immediately recognize ‘this form is human’. I approach the nude not as an object of desire, but as an emblem for the whole person – body, heart, mind and spirit.
